Who For and Where
These sessions are for carers, family, friends and individuals affected by or recovering from mental health issues. The two-hour long workshops take on up to eight participants at any one time and are held in my home in South Brent. They are also currently running at Arts Lab Dartington.
If you would prefer, the workshops can be portable; I can come to you wherever you are with my box of materials and equipment.
What We Do
In a warm, safe and welcoming environment, we drink tea or coffee, chat and get stuck into a range of activities. From still life drawing to intuitive, abstract painting and collage, you will be encouraged to be free and have fun exploring, using your imagination and thinking out of the usual box. Experimenting with a variety of art materials and techniques, the sessions are very much participant led, with guidance from myself and a new challenge each week. Much of the work is based on individual responses to music, nature, my own paintings and the work of each other and other artists. Creating at times collaboratively, in small groups and independently, the pace varies and embraces what those in the room want to follow or express on the day. See some of the fantastic work that’s been created in 2017, 2016 or 2015.
I am increasingly interested in working with those in the local community I believe can directly benefit from my approach to doing and making. With inclusivity and collaboration at the core, increased confidence and general wellbeing are fostered. By having a regular activity in a familiar place with familiar faces, experience has proven that these workshops also reduce a sense of isolation and otherwise hard-to-reach clients. A shared enjoyment of making and creating in a neutral, but supportive environment without prejudice or judgement, helps to strengthen the community and family and friendship connections. We ALL really look forward to our sessions at Stockbridge Cottage.

What’s Been Said
“I’ve really enjoyed the sessions and found them to be great in helping me gain confidence. It’s been such a lovely place to be. You’ve been a great teacher and I really appreciate all your support, so thank you!!”
“George has been on tremendous form – very expressive and talkative. Brilliant! Your workshops have been the turning point. So many thanks.
Thank you so much for the inspirational workshops. George and I are so enjoying the sessions. They are the best thing to have happened since his relapse nine years ago. He has been in denial for so long. Up till now he has been unable to communicate with others suffering or recovering from mental illness, or anyone else for that matter. He is also so pleased to be with younger peopleas the other things he does are all with the elderly.”
“This has transformed Helen’s life, now she has friends for the first time in years it is helping her come to terms with life. People with learning difficulties or no hopers seem to be catered for, but many, as in our group, are highly intelligent and feel neglected.
It was most inspiring, and an amazing result. This is the first time Helen has considered anything just for pleasure, not involved in desperately trying to get back to unsuitable financial type jobs. To get her thinking outside the box is wonderful.”
“A group of adults who are all either carers for those with mental health problems or dealing with their own individual challenges have been greatly benefitting from weekly art classes with Sara.
Having been struggling myself with various mental health difficulties spanning many years, I have found the safe space of the group, the excellent facilitation, guidance and support from Sara with the opportunity and encouragement to be creative a very valuable tool in my recovery. The safety/support/encouragement found in this group/workshop is a rare find when one is embarking on a journey of recovery/self-discovery and is a valuable asset to the Mental Health Community and indeed the Community of South Brent.”
“I joined the art workshop to support my adult son who is recovering from a mental health problem. It is helping him enormously, and in a climate of severe cuts in the NHS, it is the only therapy group in our area.”
