Spotted

Pattern and repetitive geometric shapes have always played a part in my work. Influenced by shared characteristics in music and nature of rhythm and pattern, repeating motifs unify the whole, in this case a picture plain of submerged, disparate elements. The technique also maximises the opportunity to explore and demonstrate contrasts of form, line, colour, tone and texture within each painting.

The use of circle and semi-circle forms started in earnest in 2010. Experimenting with the idea of painting over old paintings, the motif is perfect for repetitive perforations in a field of intense colour. Executed successfully, I’m happy when the viewer is intrigued as to how the paintings have been put together; have the spots been cut or rubbed out? stuck on or painted? I want the viewer to enjoy the picture from a distance as a whole, whilst also being drawn in to scrutinise the detail of the spots.
