True Wisdom

True wisdom should consist in enjoying all things, yet we apply ourselves to dissecting and destroying everything that is good in itself, everything that has virtue, even though it be a mere illusion. Nature gives us life as one gives a toy to a little child. We want to see how it works, and we crush it between our fingers. There remains to our dull eyes that have learned to see too late, nothing but sterile dust, broken fragments that can never be rejoined.

Eugene Delacroix (1798-1863)
